I’d prefer to see something whereby I can setup something on my dedicated server and the new breed of companies interface to my central data storage for me? Does that make sense?

Hmmm you make some interesting points, my concern about keeping data in one place is really - who do you trust to handle that gold version of your data?

kinda sounds like facebook stan ... :)

to keiron's point - we all have servers sitting in our house (pc/nac/linux box). so, let me keep my data on my computer. couple that w/ ipv6 and we all have our own dedicated web server(s).

gnip services can crawl our "servers" and other services can hook in. then things get interesting and distributed and cool. oh, and really really scalable too w/ no stinkin traditional web servers mucking things up.
